IRAM: The Institut de radioastronomie millimétrique
UW–Madison has a partnership with IRAM that allows for dedicated access to two different telescopes:
- The Northern Extended Millimetre Array (NOEMA) consists of an array of 12 individual 15-meter antennas and is located in the French Alps. During observations, the antennas function as a single telescope by using a technique called interferometry, providing unparalleled resolving power and sensitivity.

- The 30-m telescope is one of the largest and most sensitive radio telescopes to date, built in the Spanish Sierra Nevada. It is a premier single-dish facility for astronomical research in the millimeter wavelength range. The observatory operates 24 hours a day every day of the year and includes a control room, from which the telescope is operated, along with living quarters for scientists and IRAM staff.
