Densities and star formation rates in molecular clouds: towards a 3D view of the local ISM
Seminar by Jan Orkisz (Gre), 20 March 2023, 16h CET (15h UT)
The volume density of interstellar gas is a key physical quantity controlling cloud evolution, chemistry and star formation, but it cannot be accessed directly by observations of molecular clouds. Various techniques allow us to estimate it more or less indirectly, each of them coming with their own limitations. After giving an overview of such techniques, I will present a recent study in which we developed a modelling method to estimate the volume density distribution of molecular clouds based on column density maps. Applying it to a homogeneous sample of 24 clouds for which star formation data is also available not only allows us to probe various aspects of the relationship between column and volume densities in molecular clouds, but also enables us to derive a volume density threshold for star formation.
