Measuring dust properties in protoplanetary disks

In the last decade new observing facilities operating from optical to millimeter range provided us with new astonishing images of protoplanetary disks. These new observations revealed a variety of structures in the dust and gas emission, in particular rings and gaps, but also spiral arms and clumps, revealing the presence of local processes that are perturbing the disk dynamics already at very early stages (~1 million years).
I will discuss how our understanding of dust properties and evolution in disks has changed in the last few years thanks to multi-wavelength studies at unprecedented angular resolution, and how we can push such resolution through Fourier modelling of the millimeter visibilities. I will also briefly discuss our recent publication involving time-frequency analysis techniques applied to human brain waves (1-1000 Hz range) in the field of neurosciences.
