Astronomy Club Undergraduate Research Symposium

December 1 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Astronomy Club is excited to announce what we hope will become an annual tradition- the Astronomy Club Undergraduate Research Symposium! This year, we have asked members to prepare five-minute talks on any research they are currently working on or have recently worked on- whether it be here at UW in the department or elsewhere during an REU. Topics range from solar astrophysics and exoplanets to galaxies and the ISM!
On Thursday, December 1, 2022, from 7-8 pm, ten undergrads in the Astronomy department will be presenting their talks in room 4421. We will also be following colloquium tradition and be providing cookies (though no drinks afterward) and encouraging people to stick around for follow-up conversations, questions, and general getting to know one another afterward. Below you can find the list of talks that will be presented.
Lewis Ballard- Symbiotic Star Systems Emitting Soft-XRays in the Small Magellanic Cloud
Marcus Graham- Observing Exoplanet Transits with the Bell Burnell Observatory
Alyssa Jankowski- A Newly Tripled System: The Nearest, Smallest Exoplanet Younger than 500 Myr
Will Jarvis- Discovering Damped Lyman-alpha Systems in Emission – The Holy Grail of DLA Astronomy
Madisen Johnson- Solar Wind Composition with the Parker Solar Probe
Jenna Karcheski- Inspecting Lyman-Alpha Absorbers Relative to Nearby Galaxies
Brooke Kotton- Improved Accuracy of the Real-Time GOES-R XRS Solar Flare Location Data Product… and More!
Jakob Mills- Kinematic Analyses of Molecular Gas Clouds Observationally and Theoretically
Tyler Schmaltz- Parallel and Perpendicular Alignments of Velocity Gradient and Magnetic Field in Molecular Clouds L1478 and L1482
Lucy Steffes- Mapping Neutral Carbon in the Outer Layers of the Helix Nebula using the Atacama Compact Array
