Office Hours (4559 Sterling)
Scheduled office hours:
Tuesday, 12:00 - 1:30 pm
Wednesday, 1:00 - 3:30 pm
Office hours by appointment:
Two hours per week of office time are allotted to be scheduled by appointment. It is my hope that this will accommodate a broad range of schedules and provide flexibility to spend more time on harder subjects, less time on easier subjects. Please contact me via email to set up meetings. I fully expect to be needed for more then these two allotted hours during certain weeks, however please keep in mind that it is impossible for me to be available at all times. With this in mind please give me advance notice and a time range to work with. I will do my best to accommodate all requests. Once an appointment is scheduled it will be posted on the calendar so that additional students may attend.
Discussion Section Goals
1)Provide an open forum for discussion and interactive learning.
2)Discover topics that warrant more discussion due to section interest or confusion.
3)Utilize the small forum of discussion sections to address individual needs.
Schedule Conflicts
The deadline to request a change of discussion section is Friday, September 19th. Requests after this date will not be considered. Discussion section changes will only be considered if a hard conflict prevents you from attending the original class.
Absences
If you miss a discussion class it is in your best interest to attend an alternative section, please email me in advance so we can make arrangements.
Class Expectations and Grading
Please bring your notes and book to discussion. Be ready to ask questions and participate in class discussion.
Discussion section work / attendance will not directly affect your course grade; however, it is highly recommended that you attend all sessions. Topics of interest / confusion will be discussed at length and interactive teaching, not possible in a larger forum, will be practiced. If found to be in the best interest of the class, this policy may be revisited.
Additional Help
You are strongly encouraged to make use of office hours. If you run into difficulties and cannot resolve them on your own then attending office hours should be your next course of action. If you are still struggling with the material then you may wish to talk with the instructor (see above for a link to his webpage). Additionally, tutoring services are offered through the Astronomy Department. Contact Steve Anderson at stevea [at] astro.wisc.edu for a list of current tutors.
Misc
General announcements will be emailed to the class list and then posted on
learn@uw under the discussion tab.
