Notes for Agnes Muriel Townsend

The April 1901 Irish Census records Agnes living at house 13 in Aghada, Corkbeg, Cork, with her parents, siblings and two domestic staff. The house consisted of eleven rooms, a coach house, a stable and 13 further outbuildings.

The April 1911 Irish Census records Agnes living at Streamhill West, Cork, with her husband, their son, aged 7, and one female servant.

Guys Postal Directory 1914 shows Richard as the Resident Medical Superintendent at Heatherside Sanatorium in Doneraile, which contained 80 beds for the treatment of patients resident in the City and County of Cork, suffering from tuberculosis in the incipient stage.

*Richard Townsend Ahern was born on 13 August 1910 and died on 17 August 1966. He studied medicine at University College Cork and qualified in 1934. He married Trixie Pendle Ilean and they had the following children:

** Richard Ahern was born on 7 January 1944 in Fermoy, Co Cork. He married Heather Collet in 1969 and had two sons and a daughter.

** Sean Michael Ahern was born on 10 November 1945 in Ascot, Berkshire. He married Sue McErlaine in 1972 and had two daughters.

** Mary Ahern was born on 11 Jaunray 1951 and lives in Geneva, Switzerland.

** James Joseph Ahern was born on 15 August 1954. He married first Debbie Woods (died 2006) in 1988 and had a son and a daughter. He married second Diane Ollerton.

* Eileen Ahern was born on 12 December 1918 and married John Redmond Sullivan-Green of Airhill, Glanworth, Co Cork, (the grandson of John Redmond MP). They had a daughter, Barbara Ahern, who was born on 7 October 1942. She married Lt Comdr David Lockyer RN and had a daughter and a son.

(1) Richard Ahern was born in 1873 and died in 1938. He studied medicine at Royal University of Ireland (Queen’s College Cork) and qualified in 1899. He served with the Imperial Yeomanry in the Second Boer war - Captain and Regimental Medical Officer.
