Notes for Crewe Armand Hamilton Townsend CIE

Married 23 August 1906. Rhoda Mary Whitmore Franks (1) was the eldest daughter of General Thomas John Franks JP (2) of Ballyscadane, Co Limerick. See Burke's Irish Landed Gentry 1912 - Franks.

Crewe was educated at Shrewsbury and St John's College, Cambridge. He entered the Indian Civil Service 1898 and held a number of posts as District Officer and Settlement Officer from 1906. He was appointed Director of Agriculture in 1914, Finance Commissioner for the Punjab in 1928 and Minister Public Works Department and Revenue in Bahawalpur State 1931-39. He was also a member of the Legislative Assembly in 1921, 1923 and 1925. Crewe was appointed Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) on 1 January 1924 (3) for his work as Officiating Chief Secretary to the Government of the Punjab.

Between 1912 and 1916 Crewe published three books about Hissar District in Haryana State.

After his retirement Crewe lived at The Red House, Castletownshend and died there. Clubs; County (Cork), United Service.

(1) Rhoda was born on 26 January 1870 and died on 10 January 1962. Her sister married Hugh Hamilton Townsend [6B44] as his 2nd wife. See Who's Who 1929.

(2) Thomas was born on 17 November 1831. Married first, Clara, only daughter of George Mackenzie Kettle of Dallicott House, Shropshire on 25 April 1865. Married second, Eleanor Agnes, youngest daughter of the Rev S. Marindin of Chesterton, Bridgnorth on 29 April, 1886. Thomas was High Sheriff for Co Limerick in 1883.
