Notes for Horatio Baxter Townshend (Was always called Horace)

Horace was born in Fonthill Road, Finsbury Park, London.

Married 1897. Alice Jeanette (1) was the daughter of Alfred Kuhler of Krefeld, Germany, who had settled in England.

Educated at King's College School, London, Horace joined the Admiralty as a clerk in June 1891 (2) having qualified for a competitive entry in the Civil Service Commissioners exam. He was later promoted to Expenses Accounts Officer (3) and served in dockyards in Chatham, Malta, Devonport, Pembroke, Portsmouth, Hong Kong and Rosyth. A letter from his brother William Pearson Townshend [5D35] shows that Horace was living in Southsea in 1906 - "There is quite an invasion of Townshends in Souhtsea.....so it will be quite a large gathering at Horace's on Christmas Day". (4)

Horace spent the last nine years of his Admiralty service at Chatham and retired in 1931. He lived at 37 Bromley Road,Beckenham, Kent and died at the Highview Nursing Home, 13, Nottingham Road, Croydon. He was cremated in Croydon crematorium - London Gazette 44243 page 1524 dated 7 February 1967.

Horace was a Freemason and achieved the 32nd Degree.

(1) Alice was living at "Derry," Maidstone Road, Chatham, Kent, when she died on 17 February 1954 - London Gazette 40159 dated 27 April 1954.

(2) He was placed 25th of out of the 75 candidiates who passed the exam. London Gazette 26169 page 2991 dated 5June 1891.

(4) Derry Papers 5D35/1. Letter dated 22 December 1906 from William P Townshend to George CW Townshend. Eliza Townshend [5D18], Anne Townshend [5D20] and Hugh Morgan (son of Alicia Townshend [5D48]) joined William at Horace's for Christmas.
