Notes for Edgar Thomas Townsend

Edgar was born in Yelkin where his father farmed.

Married 25 August 1942 in Lake Cargellico. Frances Martha Booth (1) came from Charlton, Victoria.

Leaving school aged thirteen Edgar worked on his father's farm at Yelkin during his early years. On the outbreak of war in 1939 he enlisted on 13 October in West Wyalong and joined the 2/3rd Australian Infantry Battalion. His battalion was part of the first convoy to the Middle East and he saw active service in Libya, Greece and Crete. In early 1942, the 2/3rd embarked for Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) where they undertook their jungle warfare training in preparation active service in Papua New Guinea (PNG). It was during operations in PNG that Edgar was severely wounded on the Kokoda Trail and this led to him being medically discharged on 3 July 1943.

Having recovered from his wounds Edgar started a business as a contract carrier and later established himself in the stock and station agency business. He continued to expand the business until 1967 when he sold his share and returned to mixed farming at Yelkin.

Like his father, Edgar Thomas Townsend [3A14], Edgar took a great interest in all the affairs of Lake Cargellico. To name a few of his associations, he was a Councillor of Lachlan Shire for 30 years, a Central Tablelands County Councillor for 10 years, a Justice of the Peace, a foundation member and twice President of the Rotary Club and a Master of the Masonic Lodge.

Edgar died in London and is buried in Cargellico.

The website 'Townsend Surname in Australia' does not record Edgar as a son under the entry for his father; only Edward James [3A22] is shown. Apart from an unattributed entry for Edgar's brother, John Robert [3A25] elsewhere on the website, none of the other siblings are recorded.

(1) Frances was born on 24 Oct 1915 and died on 25 July 1987 in Lake Cargellico.
