AST460: Assignment 1 -------------------- (sep 7) We will be undertaking a small research project this semester and should all be aware of several important points regarding the responsible conduct of research. Please go to: http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=12192 and watch "On Being a Scientist Video". Please read the ethics statement provided by the American Astronomical Society. The link where you found the video also contains the full document "On Being a Scientist" with even individual chapters given separately. We will be discussing this document next week. Please write a short summary (2-3 paragraphs will be enough, but feel free to do more if you get inspired!) about one of the following topics (chapters) covered in the document: - The Treatment of Data ("Changing knowledge" is about the discovery of distant galaxies by Edwin Hubble) - Sharing of Research Results (which is essentially about the birth of peer-reviewed scientific journals and Henry Oldenburg) - Authorship and the Allocation of Credit (with the discovery of pulsars story) You can summarize the story, but please focus on issues related to responsible conduct in research (e.g. what is the best to do in such situations). Your written documents should be clear, concise, and understandable to those outside of your specialization. ``Writing about physics" (from the course web page) gives some good suggestions. Use any literature you like (books and scientific journals are preferred), but provide _proper_ references for any of your sources. The assignment is due at the next class meeting.
