As we traversed the relatively flat Mars-scape of the high desert, we could see that the road ahead would be much harder. A close examination of this picture reveals the track leading up the flank of Kibo to Gilman's Point, which happens to be the spot at the top where the snowfields at left suddenly disappear. Many climbers turn back after reaching Gilman's at dawn, but it is not the summit.
