Goals and Expectations
These discussion sections are meant to serve as a chance for you to interact more closely with the material than you might in lecture by allowing you to express your interest, confusion, or whatever may be with the course in greater detail with a smaller setting. Discussions will naturally revolve around recent topics covered in the lecture component of Astro 103.

My desire is to make this part of the course interactive and as a result one should not be surprised by me asking questions and expecting responses, occasional group work, or other methods I believe will help you understand the course material more fully. In that same vein, I also expect questions from you concerning the lectures, readings, and other course related exercises. As a result, I expect you to show up to discussion prepared with your notes, textbook, and questions.

To further encourage this, you will be given 1/2 point of extra credit that will be added to your final average for every week in which you bring in a question regarding the current reading or topics in class that you may have. This will help guide discussion and encourage you to critically consider recent class topics.

Course Policies and Other Notes
Concerning cell phones, I expect them to be silenced and put away before discussion begins and not to be used during discussion.

While laptops may be used for notetaking, I do expect you to use discretion in their use and limit their use to that directly related to the class and discussion. If exercising that discretion is too much for you, please leave the laptop in your bag or at home.

To get in touch with me concerning course questions outside of class and oce hours, email is the best form of contact. I will respond to them as I can. That is to say do not expect immediate responses, but they will be answered in a timely fashion. However, I will not respond to emails concerning test or quiz material sent after 5:00 PM the day before the occurrence of a test or quiz. Still the best way to talk to me outside of class is during my oce hours. If they conict with your schedule, email me, and we can set up an appointment.

If you have to miss a discussion due to extenuating circumstances, it is in your interest to make that up by attending a different discussion section. Please contact me, and we can set up a make up class.

Lastly, I retain the right to alter or add to this syllabus in minor ways as the evolution of the course may necessitate.
