Epsilon Eri is a BY Dra-type star (flaring variable).  This system was settled by what was probably the least prepared first colonists of all the extrasolar colonies.  A large contingent of Taiwanese refugees fleeing from persecution in the Mars War managed to overrun a New Chinese colony ship, whose departure for Epsilon Eri was postponed by the war.  The Taiwanese voyaged without any hibenation capabilities so, despite the fact that there were many fewer colonists than the Chinese had planned for, they arrived in rough shape with short rations.  In the first year on the planet they called Taiwan, about a third of the colonists died, many of starvation.  Finally, the second year they got a successful harvest in their cobbled-togther greenhouses and the colony saw better years thereafter.  Still, despite the tragedy, the first colonists are seen as heroes.
