Invitation 28 August 2001 Greetings! We would like to invite you to join with us at WIYNFest, a celebration of the first 5 years of the WIYN Observatory. WIYNFest will be held on Saturday, October 27, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm on the Yale University campus in New Haven CT. We have planned an exciting day exploring the forefronts of modern astronomy. In addition to wonderful descriptive presentations by WIYN astronomers, we plan a remote live tour of the observatory, a forum where leading astronomers will serve at your pleasure to answer all questions (as best they can!), and abundant opportunities to meet with WIYN astronomers and other alumni with a passion for astronomy. Astronomers will join with you at lunch to chat about astronomy and what is happening in their institutions. The day will end with a dinner in the Hall of Dinosaurs of the Yale Peabody Museum and an after dinner talk on the evolution and extinction of the Dinosaurs. The WIYN Observatory, located on Kitt Peak AZ, is a joint enterprise of the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University, Yale University and the National Optical Astronomy Observatory. This unique collaboration of state, private, and federal institutions was recently cited by the Christian Science Monitor as "an example [for the future of US observatories]. The telescope, dedicated in 1994, is considered the most capable of its class in the world". WIYN astronomers have already made seminal contributions to the study of distant supernovae and the expansion of the Universe, the origins of galaxies, star clusters, and the still mysterious gamma-ray bursters. This will be a unique and exciting event in the history of the WIYN partners. We very much hope that you will share it with us. The WIYN Board of Directors
