Second and final announcement for WIYN 3.5m 2008B proposals, due: **** 5 PM CDT Monday 7 Apr 2007. **** (There will be a separate call for WIYN 0.9m proposals) 1. Submission will be electronic, in pdf format only, via email to: wiynprop@astro.wisc.edu 2. These announcements and the updated proposal form are posted on www.astro.wisc.edu/wiyn/wiyn.html 3. Proposal instructions: a. Scientific Justification Give a concise summary of your scientific justification and brief explanation of the calculation of exposure times on the next page. NO MORE THAN 1 PAGE FOR THIS MATERIAL. If you are requesting observing time for an ONGOING project, please summarize progress to date, and explain why more data are needed. How many nights have been allocated and how many were useful? Also discuss how much time you think will be needed to complete or reach the next major milestone for your project. If this is the first request for a NEW observing project, the TAC is also interested in how much observing time this project will take and what other telescopes or resources are being used. b. Recent results The last page first allows you to briefly tell us what you've recently accomplished with WIYN. If this is an ongoing project, use this section to show progress and publications. If it is a new project but you have had previous WIYN allocations, briefly summarize what happened with the data. *** Graduate thesis applicants please note! *** If you are a graduate student requesting thesis observations, please summarize all time allocated to the project to date, success of past allocations, and status of data acquired. Indicate your total expected request and timeline. Explain and justify departures from your your thesis proposal. You may take up to an extra half-page if necessary. 4. Information on available instruments can be found here: http://www.noao.edu/kpno/instruments.html http://www.noao.edu/wiyn/ Supplemental information BENCH (i.e., HYDRA, SPARSEPAK) ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Bench collimator upgrade is currently expected to take place during the shutdown period in Aug. WIYN scheduling from 1 Aug to 10 Aug will be normal, but no Bench use will be scheduled for any of WIYN during the time period from 25 Aug to 1 Sept. We also will be encouraging imaging projects in early Sept. as contingency if needed for the Bench. The Bench is likely to be using the new STA1 CCD in 2008B. Propose as if the old CCD is available but check out the following web page for new CCD details. The largest changes in the new CCD are are lower read noise, smaller pixels, better QE, and faster readout time. http://www.wiyn.org/instrument/bench_upgrade.html VPH gratings The two new VPH gratings are available for use. The 740 l/mm and the 3300 l/mm. The 3300 l/mm will be shared risk in 2008B. If you have questions about these gratings contact Gene McDougall (WIYN), Matt Bershady (Wisc.), or Di Harmer (NOAO). WHIRC ------------------------------------------------------------------ WHIRC (WIYN High Resolution IR Camera), built by Margaret Meixner (STScI) and collaborators, will be available for use during 2008B. While WHIRC will hopefully be used with the WTTM (WIYN Tip-Tilt Module), this mode is NOT being offered in 2008B. T&E schedule: ------------------------------------------------------------------ For 2008B we plan to have T&E runs extend 3 nights near full moon in every month. This is to allow for both normal T&E activities as well as the the need for new instrument commissioning. Additional commissioning and science verification nights may be covered in DD time or via PI proposals. OPTIC schedule: ------------------------------------------------------------------ During semester 2008B, OPTIC will officially be available from mid-Oct to the end of the semester. There maybe a slight delay in receipt in Oct, so it is possible that Mini-Mo will be scheduled then. If you want to use OPTIC, ask for it but keep in mind you _may_ be scheduled with Mini-Mo if outside the official OPTIC time. DensePak: ------------------------------------------------------------------ DensePak is no longer offered. ++++++++++++++++++Working 2008B 2-month Block Schedule ++++++++++++ Nights Allocated by Month | Dark | Gray | Bright | N W I Y | N W I Y | N W I Y ----+------------------------+--------------------+------------------- Aug/Sep 7 7 3 4 | 6 0 1 0 | 1 4 0 0 Oct/Nov 8 6 5 6 | 7 4 0 2 | 4 3 5 0 Dec/Jan 14 6 5 3 | 1 5 5 0 | 8 2 0 0 ----+------------------------+--------------------+------------------- Tot | 29 19 13 13 | 14 9 6 2 | 13 9 5 0 Total Percentage Allocations --------N-----W----I----Y----- Total| 39.7 26.2 17.1 16.9
