Abstract Chandra observations of the X-ray atmospheres of galaxy clusters and early type galaxies show that AGN feedback is a critical ingredient in the low-redshift evolution of cosmic structure. However, Chandra observations of these systems are photon-starved, and key questions that can only be addressed by high-resolution imaging spectroscopy are left unanswered. I will discuss the prospects of the next generation of X-ray observatories for answering some of these key questions, and why high spatial resolution is critical if we want to settle the question of the hot-halo/radio mode of AGN feedback in galaxies.
