I work on star formation, radiation transfer, and infrared surveys of our Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds.

Biography:

Dr. Barbara Whitney has been a member of the University of Wisconsin Astronomy Department going all the way back to August of 2010.  Prior to that she just visited the department regularly, but worked out of her home office through the Space Science Institute.  She obtained her Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Wisconsin in 1989 and worked at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics until 1995.

Dr. Whitney applies her Monte Carlo radiation transfer models to study star formation.  She and collaborators have produced a large grid of models and an SED fitter to help model the large number of Young Stellar Objects being observed by several infrared Space Observatories (...read more
