Melinda Soares-Furtado awarded Hubble Fellowship

Feb 22, 2021

Melinda Soares-Furtado, who joined the Departmnent of Astronomy in Fall 2020 as a postdoctoral fellow, has been awarded a prestigious Hubble Fellowship through the NASA Hubble Fellowship Program (NHFP). The NFHP supports outstanding postdoctoral scientists to pursue independent research which contributes to NASA Astrophysics using theory, observation, experimentation, or instrument development. The fellowship provides stipend, travel and research expense support for three years; there are only a limited number awarded each year (in 2021, twenty-four), and so the program is extremely competitive.

Melinda's fellowship research program, titled "Devoured Worlds: The Signatures of Substellar Ingestion", will focus on the search for stars that have recently 'eaten' a close-by companion. She's especially interested in ingestion of brown dwarfs -- gaseous objects that don't quite have enough mass to support the sustained nuclear reactions that are the hallmark of a star.
