Madison is a city of about 200,000 whose geography is dominated by two lakes, Mendota and Monona, which bracket the downtown Isthmus region to the north and south. In the center of the the isthmus, the state capitol building looms over the rest of the city, the golden statue of Wisconsin glowing at dawn and dusk. Besides being the seat of the state government, Madison is home to the flagship of the University of Wisconsin system. UW-Madison is located just west of downtown on the south shore of Lake Mendota. With a student population of over 40,000, Madison often seems to be overrun by University folks especially when the football team plays home games at Camp Randall Stadium, thus earning it the nickname "Madtown."
