Subject: How to submitt a paper to astro-ph using web
Dear Colleagues,

John Mathis asked me for the info about submitting to astro-ph and I wondered whether someone else might find this info useful. There are some hints that took me a while to learn (for instance how to cross-list a paper). The info is below:

Los Alamos server of electronic preprints accepts now submissions through your WWW server (which is easier than ftp or email).

To do it:

1. Prepare your manuscript and all figures, tables, etc. Combine them into one TAR file, and gzip compress it. For example:

tar cvf xxx.tar "list of your files"
gzip xxx.tar

2. Register as an author (only once) by sending email

mail astro-ph@xxx.lanl.gov
subject line: reg
(no text)

You will receive a reply with your account name (it will be your
local account name) and a tentative password that you can change
later. Then go to

http://xxx.lanl.gov/register

type in your account and passwd at prompt, and then enter all
your relevant data

3. Finally proceed to the submission stage at

http://xxx.lanl.gov/submit

where you will be asked to type your title, name, comments,
POP number and the abstract. Check the submitted information
by clicking on Submit (but don't enter your file). If it's ok,
click on the Browse button, type in your *.tar.gz file name
and WONDER.

It is really easy and allows much greater freedom to edit and double check your submission.

You also can replace and cross-list your papers:

to replace use

http://xxx.lanl.gov/replace

to cross-list (they do not explain how to do this at all!):

http://xxx.lanl.gov/uploads

to get cross-list form

Enjoy!
